Dr. Adrienne K Mulligan DVM
Dr. Nicholas Volkman VMD

Dr. Adrienne K. Mulligan graduated from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1993.  She had completed her undergraduate studies in 1981 at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and had intended to continue on to Veterinary School, but she put her career plans on hold and opted for marriage instead.  However, in 1989 she decided to go back to school and finish her degree in Veterinary Medicine.  She had always wanted to move out west to join her sister in California, so she took her first veterinary position in Laguna Niguel, California at a 24 hour walk-in veterinary hospital.  It was not long before she worked the night shift, which provided her with extensive opportunity to develop her skills in emergency medicine.  She found a mentor in Dr. Ravi Seshadri, a board certified internist and critical care specialist at a local referral hospital who now owns two critical care, multi-discipline hospitals, one in California and one in Utah.  At the time, “Dr. Ravi” worked the night shift as well, in the referral hospital, and Dr. Mulligan consulted with him over the phone on a regular basis, and he taught her the fine art of diagnosing disease and managing critically ill patients.  Through the years, she became less and less dependent on his guidance, becoming a skilled diagnostician in her own rite, and saving pets’ lives by sound medical and surgical practices.

She practiced in California for 6 years, leaving the 24 hour hospital for a more routine position with VetSmart, now known as “Banfield animal hospitals”.  In 1999, she and her husband, Jerry Mulligan, decided to explore the southwest to find a quieter life than what California could provide, and found Sedona, Arizona.  Her first job in Arizona was at Sedona Animal Clinic, but after 2 years she moved on into a temporary career of “relief” work, providing substitute veterinary services to practice owners in northern Arizona.  This brought her to Camp Verde and ultimately into ownership of Camp Verde Veterinary Clinic in Camp Verde, Arizona.  By this time, she had come to realize that her dream practice would be most like the 24 hour clinic she started out in.  She advertised to hire other veterinarians in an attempt to make this dream come true, but found out how difficult it is to persuade others to move to a rural yet suburban town like Camp Verde.  Unsuccessful in her attempts, she grew the practice on her own, developing a fiercely loyal client base.  She is known for her generous and loving approach to pets and the “human-pet” bond.  It is also well known that her dedication to obtaining a diagnosis and settling for nothing less than a successful treatment outcome, resembles the tenacity of a Pit Bull dog stubbornly hanging on to his chew bone.

When 2009 proved to be an extremely challenging year for everyone, especially small business owners, it began to look as if her dream was not to be realized.  In fact, she was dangerously close to losing both of her businesses, the clinic and the beautiful “Northern Arizona Pet Suites”, the very best place to let your pet go to enjoy your holiday.  After exhausting every avenue of financial relief, she knew she either had to do something unique to the area that would bring more clients and pets through her door, or close it and put the lock on.  It was time to realize her dream of “24”.  It wasn’t easy, she had one part-time veterinarian working for her, Dr. Nicholas Volkman.  He agreed to go full time, 40 hours.  But this still meant that she alone had to work the other 128 hours in a week.  The grueling schedule paid off and she began to realize how much she truly loved doing “emergency medicine”.  By Christmas, business was not exactly “booming” but it was busy enough to justify adding a third doctor, Dr. LeAnn Romans.
2010 brought with it optimism and excitement, as word of her 24 hour availability spread.  Veterinary Clinics in the area began to refer after-hour emergencies to the clinic as well as sending patients that needed 24 hour monitoring and care.  Dr. Mulligan continued to work the night shift, bringing her skills to the community, saving pets’ lives on a daily basis, and helping to make life better for her colleagues, pet owners, and of course, her patients.  For the 4th year in a row, Camp Verde Veterinary Clinic captured the honor of “Best Veterinary Clinic in the Verde Valley”, and this year the Camp Verde Veterinary Clinic Veterinarians and the support staff truly earned it more than ever.

Doctor Mulligan, Doctor Volkman, and Doctor Romans, along with the rest of their team, invite you to give them the opportunity to be there for you when one of your patients needs after-hours care, so that you can have a reasonable work schedule that allows you to remain refreshed and enthusiastic about going to work in the mornings.  We will provide you with records and provide your client with post-treatment instructions that include coming to your clinic for follow-up care.  Our clinic is equipped with a comprehensive laboratory that includes coagulation testing, as well as an I-Stat for rapid results, in addition to standard laboratory equipment.  We have an oxygen cage, a well appointed isolation unit, and our pharmacy includes an array of medications designed to meet the needs of most urgent care patients.  We believe in the highest standard of care and ethical treatment of both the patient and the referring DVM.  We believe in pain management and an emphasis on quality of life issues for our patients.

Thank you in advance for your support, and we invite you to come visit our hospital and get to know our staff!

Sincerely,

Adrienne K. Mulligan, DVM
